With faith and a child, things change

A baby and a Bible changed the relationship dynamics for Kelly Shandelle Corpuz and Toby Alamoana Keohokapu Jr.

The two were sweethearts at Farrington High School.

Corpuz, a 24-year-old medical assistant, still remembers when she would head downstairs for Spanish class and try to catch a glimpse of Keohokapu, who was two years older and took Japanese.

They have fond memories of "cruising" together and of sharing their first kiss on Dec. 26, 1994.

But the years that followed consisted of a lot of breaking up and getting back together.

"I wasn't really serious," said Keohokapu, now a 26-year-old construction worker. "I was in high school and I played the field. She always told me I was the one for her."

Corpuz says Keohokapu was her first and only love.

"There's something about him," she said. "I knew I only wanted him."

Then, four years ago, Corpuz got pregnant.

"We didn't want to get married because of the baby," she said.

But things changed.

"She had my son," Keohokapu said. "I decided maybe I should just settle down."

Keohokapu's uncle invited him to Bible study, and suddenly Keohokapu took a turn toward maturity.

"Before, I was into smoking weed and drinking beer and stuff like that," he said. "I changed. People really noticed that, and the way we talk to each other and the way we talk to our son. I prayed and asked if this was my calling, and I prayed that I needed help. One day, I woke up and didn't even have the urges I used to have. So I was like, wow, I think He answered my prayers."

Corpuz also had her prayers answered. She began to go to the Church of Christ in Kailua, Keohokapu proposed, and they attended premarital counseling at church.

"Everyone was surprised when we got married," she said.

But they did it, tying the knot Dec. 18 in the courtyard of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort in front of 300 people.

Corpuz says she'd go through it all again to have things end up this way.

"He's been my best friend," she said. "He changed my outlook on life. I was spoiled growing up. I take things differently now."

Keohokapu says now that he's married, he respects his wife more for everything she's gone through.

"I appreciate Kelly for being so patient with me and understanding," he said. "She had faith that one day we would be with each other. I think I'm the happiest now that I ever was."
