Marine, 19, struck by car

Advertiser Staff

A 19-year-old Kane'ohe Marine was seriously injured early yesterday when he was hit by a car on Kapi'olani Boulevard near Atkinson Drive, police said.

The man was outside the marked crosswalk as he crossed Kapi'olani and was struck by a 1987 Nissan Maxima driven by a 28-year-old Honolulu man traveling 'ewa at around 5:15 a.m., according to police.

The victim sustained head, leg and internal injuries. Originally listed in serious condition, he was downgraded to critical when he arrived at The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

Police believe that neither speed nor alcohol was a factor on the part of the driver but think alcohol may have been a factor with the pedestrian.
