Duke's honors expert weaver

Duke's Waikiki has honored Esther Kakalia Westmoreland with its sixth annual Duke's Ho'okahiko Award.

She is considered to be the foremost practitioner of traditional Native Hawaiian weaving techniques. She is also an expert in Samoan, Tahitian and other Polynesian plant fiber-weaving techniques with expertise in creating floor mats, hula skirts, hats, fans, baskets, sails and much more.

A Big Island native, Auntie Esther, 92, has shared her expertise with residents and visitors alike and still teaches a weekly class at Kapahulu Senior Center.



Council selects new officers

Kenji Sumida has succeeded Frank Boas as board president of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council.

New officers: chairman, Warren Luke, chairman and CEO of Hawaii National Bank; vice president, Mitchell Imanaka, managing partner, Imanaka Kudo & Fujimoto; vice president, Roland Lagareta, senior sales assistant, Morgan Stanley; vice president, Jean Rolles, vice president, community relations, Outrigger Hotels Hawaii; treasurer, Arthur Tokin, managing partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP; secretary, Ruth Limtiaco, owner, The Limtiaco Company.

New board members: Carlos Juarez, acting dean of international studies, Hawai'i Pacific University; Sue Wesselkamper, president, Chaminade University; Nate Smith, president, Oceanic Time Warner Cable.



UH professor receives award

Patricia Blanchette, professor and chairwoman of the department of geriatric medicine and founder of the geriatric medicine fellowship program at University of Hawai'i's John A. Burns School of Medicine, is one of 10 individuals nationwide to receive the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's 2005 Parker J. Palmer "Courage to Teach" award.



Two programs win anti-crime award

Waikiki Health Center and Breakthroughs for Youth at Risk were selected from numerous nominees as winners of the 2004 Central Pacific C.A.T.C.H. (Citizens Against Troublemakers and Criminals in Hawai'i) Award.
