Hilo guard Cabagnot honored by PacWest

Hawai'i-Hilo point guard Alex Cabagnot has been selected the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for his performances in three non-conference basketball victories.

Cabagnot, a 6-0 senior, tallied 44 points, 18 assists and 10 steals in three games last week for UH-Hilo (12-1).

Cabagnot scored 15 points and dished out five assists in an 80-57 victory over Pacific University on Dec. 28. The next night, the Los Angeles native had a team-high 22 points along with six assists and four 3-pointers in a 91-70 victory over Saint Martin's College. He closed out the week with seven points and seven assists in a 78-46 win over Asbury College on Thursday.

On the season, Cabagnot leads the conference in assist-turnover ratio (2.41) and is second in assists per game (5.38).


Rainbow fund-raiser will be held Feb. 1

The annual University of Hawai'i Baseball Grand Slam Celebration will be held Feb. 1 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The event, which raises money for the UH baseball program, runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Cost is $65 per person or $750 per table of eight. Each sponsored table will have two UH players. Portions of the prices are tax deductible. Parking is free by presenting the event's ticket to the parking attendant. Two complimentary tickets to the Feb. 17 game against Pacific are included with each ticket purchase.

A number of local restaurants and concessionaires will provide heavy pupu and drinks.

The players and coaches will be introduced, and a silent auction will be held.
