Isles well-represented in bowls

Several Hawai'i athletes played for Mainland teams in college football bowl games this season. Here's a recap:

CHRIS KEMOEATU

Utah senior offensive lineman Chris Kemoeatu (Kahuku '01 of Kahuku) and sophomore offensive lineman Tavo Tupola (Kahuku '99 of Kahuku) started in the Utes' 35-7 Fiesta Bowl win Saturday.

Freshman defensive back Afa Garrigan (Kahuku '04 of Hau'ula), senior defensive lineman Tevita Kemoeatu (Kahuku '99 of Kahuku) and senior long snapper Brady Parkhurst (Leilehua '99 of Wahiawa) all received playing time.

• Colorado freshman linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) had six tackles (three solo) and a fumble recovery in a 33-28 win over Texas-El Paso at the Houston Bowl last Wednesday.

Junior defensive tackle Vaka Manupuna (Saint Louis '01 of Kane'ohe) had four tackles (one solo).

• Tennessee junior right tackle Jesse Mahelona (Kealakehe '01 of Kailua, Kona) started but did not record a tackle in Saturday's 38-7 Cotton Bowl win over Texas A&M.

• Wisconsin junior center Donovan Raiola (Kamehameha '00 of Honolulu) started Saturday's 24-21 Outback Bowl loss to Georgia.



MORE FOOTBALL

• Fresno City College sophomore offensive lineman Palauni Ma Sun Jr. (Kahuku of La'ie) was named to the All-California Region II first team, selected by the JC Athletic Bureau/California Community College Football Coaches Association.

Also at Fresno CC are freshman DB Jonah Lakatani (Saint Louis of Nanakuli), sophomore OL Pat So'oalo (Kailua), freshman OL Larry So'oalo (Kailua), sophomore OL Kalavi Blanchard (Kahuku), sophomore OL Mike Nguyen (McKinley of Honolulu), freshman OL Steve Lightsy (Kahuku of Hau'ula), sophomore DL Tolifili Liufau (Saint Louis of Honolulu) and sophomore DL Ma'aele Uele (Waipahu).



Men's Basketball

• Washington State freshman point guard Derrick Low (Iolani '04 of Honolulu) scored 10 points and had four assists in a 60-51 win over Stanford Dec. 31.

He had four points and two assists in a 59-47 loss to California Sunday.

• Northwest Missouri State senior guard Sky Wilson (Kalaheo '01) scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in an 88-81 overtime loss to Southwest Baptist Dec. 30.

• Two players from Hawai'i at Webster (St. Louis) are off to good starts.

Senior center Kaniela Aiona (Honoka'a '01 of Waimea) was the MVP of the Midwest Classic in November and the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week (Dec. 5 to 11).

Junior forward Christian Basilio (Hilo '02) was selected to the Sodexho Classic All-Tournament team in November.



Women's Basketball

• Pacific (Calif.) junior Tina Sanerivi (Farrington of Waipahu) had game highs of 23 points, shooting 10 of 15, and eight rebounds in a 61-55 win Dec. 30.

• Idaho State freshman guard India Soo (Kamehameha '04 of Kamuela) had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists in a 65-54 loss to Wyoming on Dec. 30.

• Menlo freshman guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) was named to the Peninsula Hoops Classic all-tournament team, after scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds in a 75-64 loss to Madonna U. Dec. 30.

Lee also scored a career-high 26 points in a 74-59 upset of No. 24 Doane College Dec. 29.

• Mesa State College senior forward Rosa Masler (Maui of Kahului) scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 63-51 loss to Nebraska-Kearney on Dec. 18. Her performance was named as one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West Division's top individual performances for Dec. 22.



Wrestling

• Cornell senior Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Liliha) suffered his first loss of the season, falling to Edinboro's Shawn Bunch, 11-10, in the championship match at the Southern Scuffle Dec. 30.

• Iowa State junior Grant Nakamura (Baldwin of Wailuku) was the surprise of the Midlands Wrestling Championships on Dec. 31, after making the 125-pound title match. He was the 11th seed.

He upset second-seeded Efren Ceballos of Cal State-Bakersfield, 9-7, in a semifinal match, then fell to Michigan State's Nick Simmons, 10-0, in the final.



Gymnastics

• Maryland senior gymnast Mandy Pascual is returning to Hawai'i to participate in the Maui Invitational Friday at the War Memorial Gymnasium in Wailuku.

Pascual, a 2001 graduate of Punahou from 'Aiea, is competing in her first meet of the season.

Also participating in the meet are Boise State, Arizona State, and Alaska, Anchorage, which features freshman Faye Nelson, a Waiakea graduate from Hilo.



Women's Swimming

• Tulane sophomore Leslie Christian (Leilehua '03 of Wahiawa) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:35.99 at the Florida International Invitational Sunday.



Men's Water Polo

• UCLA junior center defender David Pietsch (Punahou '01 of Manoa) was a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference selection.

Pietsch earned a 3.13 grade point average.
