Def Poetry Jam whiz to put the slam on Ala Moana competition

HBO Def Poetry Jam veteran Bridget Gray will be tonight's guest at First Thursdays.

Slam starts the new year off right. And First Thursdays is ready for a second round of slam competition at its new Ala Moana Hotel Hawaiian Hut location, 8:30 tonight.

Guesting tonight is HBO Def Poetry Jam veteran Bridget Gray, a winner of HBO's Soul Poetry Slam, The Battle of L.A. and the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe Slam. As usual, a new collection of competitors will lay down flow for First Thursday $100 monthly prize and a spot on the 2005 HawaiiSlam Team finals.

Entry is $3 before 8:30 and $5 thereafter. Information: 387-9664.



A do-it-yourself book for those dyeing to be an artist

Scrapbook fans, watercolorists and home craftsmen will be interested in "Paper Dyeing for Collage & Crafts," (Belknap Publishing, paper, $24.95), a collaboration between Island artists and teachers Gloria Foss and Susan Rogers-Aregger.

Foss wrote a book on oil painting and owned an art school. Rogers-Aregger, her former student, is a painter, ceramicist and former gallery owner who conducts workshops.
