Ikaika Tan, an all-star football player and track standout at Kapolei High School, died yesterday from multiple injuries suffered in a car accident near the Kahe Power Plant.

Kapolei football coach Darren Hernandez said Tan, a 17-year-old senior, had plans to walk on to the University of Hawai'i football team in August.

According to police, Tan was the lone occupant of a 1995 two-door Honda Prelude heading west on Farrington Highway at about 11:40 a.m. yesterday. He apparently lost control of the vehicle after trying to pass another car and eventually hit a guardrail.

Tan suffered multiple head and body injuries and was taken to St. Francis Medical Center-West in critical condition. He was then transferred to The Queen's Medical Center, where he later died. Tan was wearing a seat belt, but speed was a factor.

Tan was a first team All-O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division defensive back this past season. Hernandez said Tan was a three-year starter at slotback and defensive back for the Hurricanes, who have played only three varsity seasons.

Tan also took third in the OIA 100-meter dash finals last spring.
