General Public to play Pipeline

By Derek Paiva
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Let's play name that movie tune.

What jangly '80s Brit-pop anthem was playing in the background when Anthony Michael Hall took his date home in "Weird Science," and at the end of "Clueless" when Alicia Silverstone caught the bridal bouquet?

Give yourself a gold star if you guessed General Public's biggest hit, "Tenderness."

Vocalist/songwriter Dave Wakeling, right, still tours as General Public, though without former music partner and fellow English Beat alumnus Ranking Roger. So expect to hear General Public hits ("I'll Take You There") and a good dose of classic English Beat ska revival ("Mirror in the Bathroom," "I Confess") when Wakeling plays the Pipeline Cafe Wednesday.

Tickets are $15 advance, $20 door. The show starts at 8 p.m. Charge by phone at (877) 750-4400.
