FESTIVAL: Jan. 15

The Hawaii Korean Chamber of Commerce presents its fourth annual Korean Festival. The festival's theme is "See, Taste, Listen Korea," and among the offerings are traditional and contemporary Korean music and dance, cooking demonstrations, make-n-take arts and crafts, cultural exhibits and food from local Korean restaurants. Admission is free.

CONCERT: Jan. 15

Celebrate the new year in a big way with a massive concert celebrating the release of Fiji's latest CD. The 3rd Annual Winter Bash Concert features Ho'onu'a, Ten Feet, Go Jimmy Go, B.E.T., Koa'uka, O-Shen, Red Degree, Kawao, and of course, the big man himself, Fiji, left. Tickets are $10-$16.50 lawn, $18.50 second terrace, $22.50 first terrace and $25 pool. Gates open at 3 p.m.

DANCE: Jan. 21-22

Ballet Hawaii's 2004-05 season continues with the colorful arrival of Pilobolus. The contemporary dance company blends dance, acrobatics and living sculpture for a whimsical and amusing show full of flexibility, gracefulness and creativity. Tickets: $25, $35 and $45, with discounts for students, seniors and military.

FILM: Jan. 21-22

Take a peek at Kathryn Xian's latest work, "Hawaii Slam: Poetry in Paradise." The celebrated producer/director's film features Melvin Borja, Kealoha, Selah, Travis T., Intrepid and the First Thursdays poetry slam crowd as the HawaiiSlam Team heads for St. Louis for the Slam Nationals. The first night of the showing has DJ Dawn on the turntables, with DJ Rebel Girl taking over on the second night. Each screening will be followed by a question-and-answer period with the cast and director. Admission to this all-ages event is $7 general and $5 students.

Jazz great Louis Hayes and the Cannonball Legacy Band promises a booming good time. It'll be an explosion of music and fun as Hayes, known as the "architect of post-bop modern jazz," brings down the house along with Vincent Herring on sax, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Rick Germanson on piano and Vincent Archer on bass. Tickets are $20 general, $15 military, seniors, students, UH faculty and staff, and $10 UH-Manoa and Windward Community College students.

The ever-fascinating, always mesmerizing Carol Channing, below, is back for a one-woman show, "An Enchanting Evening of Stories and Song." The singer-actress will share musical ditties and offer anecdotes from the popular shows and films that made her a star. Tickets: $35 and $50.

South African vocal sounds will resonate as a cappella ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo heads over for a feel-good time. The group's lastest CD, "No Boundaries," is a blend of traditional African musical styles with Western classical works, featuring masterful Mambazo pieces and classical selections by Mozart, Schubert and Bach as accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra.

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa Department of Theatre and Dance next offers the folk play, "Luck and Loss: Manandin's Gamble." In a world exclusive, this traditional Indonesian Randai dance/drama has been translated into English by director Kirstin Pauka. The play showcases martial arts, dance, singing, music and percussion while telling a story about love, gambling and adventure. Tickets, on sale Jan. 18, are $15 general, $12 seniors, military and UH faculty/staff, $10 non-UH-Manoa students, $3 UH-Manoa students.

OPERA: Jan. 28-Feb. 1

Hawaii Opera Theatre opens its 2005 season with Richard Wagner's somber "The Flying Dutchman." This dramatic opera follows a cursed sea captain as he searches for true love in order to find redemption. Randy Locke is Erik, with Lori Phillips as Senta. Gary Simpson plays The Dutchman. Henry G. Akina directs. English supertitles will be projected above the stage. Tickets: $42-$100.

Catch a case of the funnies when Kailua native Mark Pinkosh, right, unveils "Haole Boy 2 — Haole-er Than Thou," the sequel to his 1993 smash comedy "Haole Boy." Follow Haole Boy on more comic adventures as the title character explores more about growing up white in multicultural Hawai'i. Tickets are $20 general, or $16 for members of PBS Hawai'i.

Cheese postponed

A performance by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine, scheduled at Wave Waikiki Jan. 14 and 16, has been postponed.

Back for more laughs

Comic Rex Navarrete, who last performed at Pipeline Cafe in October, returns to the venue this month. The shows begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 15-16, with opening act Shawn Felipe; doors open at 6. Tickets: $25 presale, at Cheapo's University, Jelly's in 'Aiea and Hawaii's Natural High, 926-3000. Tickets at the door: $30.

'Virgins of Punk' rock on

Get those eardrums in shape with "Virgins of Punk VIII," a concert featuring the punk/emo/ hardcore/psychobilly sounds of bands The Grave Robbers, The Crud, Youth in Asia, Laissez Faire, Pacifica and Your Accomplice. Presented by Unity Crayons, the concert begins at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at Coffee Talk in Kaimuki. Admission: $5.

Same-sex marriage film

"I Will, I Do, We Did," a new film about the events that led to and followed the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in San Francisco Feb. 12, will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Architecture Auditorium. Director Roland Joseph Torres will attend a post-screening Q&A session. Admission: $5 general, $3 students.
