ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Music, art mix at Soullenz

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Jammarek will do their thing at Soullenz gallery tonight at 8.
It's spiritual! It's revelatory! You can dance to it! (Sort of.) Music once again mixes with art tonight at River Street multimedia gallery Soullenz (186 N. King St., second floor).

Percussion ensemble Jammarek will mix it up after the opening of world-traveling mystic George Jacob's exhibition of canvasses, "Spiritual Revelations." Jacob's expressions blend rock icons, rastas, spiritual masters, serene abstracts and Hawaiiana themes.

Jacob does the meet-and-greet from 6 to 8 p.m.; Jammarek takes over from 8 to 10 p.m. The band returns to Soullenz every first Friday. 525-7757.

Bread on patent leather

It sounds really weird, but this tip comes from one of fashion's most astute personal shoppers, Betty Halbreich of Bergdorf Goodman, who wrote the book "Secrets of a Fashion Therapist."

To clean patent leather, Halbreich recommends rubbing the shoes or bag with a piece of white bread (yes, the squishy Wonder bread type).

For white or light patent leathers, she uses a little bit of nail polish remover to get rid of dark scuff marks, then cleans the entire shoe with a bar of Ivory soap, followed by a wipe-down with a clean soft washcloth.

FINAL WORD

Bob Barker | 81, on coming back for his 34th season of hosting "The Price is Right."

"I was considering retiring this year and going into body-building with the thought in mind of becoming governor of California, but I decided instead to stay with the body I have and the job I have."
