Safe-boating class set at Waikiki Yacht Club

Advertiser Staff

A three-session evening course in safe boating offered by the Honolulu Sail and Power Squadron will be held on three consecutive Mondays starting this Monday at the Waikiki Yacht Club.

The course, entitled "Boat Smart," is designed for skippers and would-be skippers, and is open to men, women and teenagers.

The introductory, basic course includes classroom lectures and self-study lessons covering the techniques of safe handling of sail and power craft, anchoring, tying basic knots, chart reading, using a mariners compass, and marine radiotelephones. Aids to navigation, such as buoys and range markers, also are explained in illustrated lectures.

Classes will be at the Waikiki Yacht Club at the entrance to Ala Moana Park across from Atkinson Drive on Monday evenings at 7. Classes are free except for a $25 charge for instruction materials. Early registration is advised. Call 395-5080.

Ownership of a boat is not required. Graduates may be eligible for a discount on their marine insurance. If they elect to join the squadron, they become eligible for 14 advanced navigating and marine equipment courses.

The Honolulu Sail and Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, America's largest private boating organization.
