Iolani rolls past Saint Louis, 58-46

BY Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Iolani School boys basketball team began the second half the way Saint Louis started the first — hot — and pulled away from the visiting Crusaders for a 58-46 victory last night.

It was the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both teams and 86th consecutive victory over a Hawai'i opponent for the Raiders, whose last loss to a local opponent was against Kalaheo on Dec. 8, 2001.

Saint Louis looked like a threat to end the streak early on, jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes. But Iolani quickly tied it at 9-9 two minutes later.

The youthful Crusaders — with only one senior on the roster — stayed close to the Raiders until midway through the second period, when Kyle Pape's free throws started a 13-1 run that helped Iolani to a 32-21 halftime lead.

"We didn't get off to a good start, and they hit shots early," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "We tried to make it tougher for them to hit shots, and that's when we evened it out. We feed off our defense."

Iolani came out blazing in the second half, with Pape and Vinny Nip sparking a 12-0 run to make it 44-21 with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter.

"We had some mental breakdowns, and (the Raiders) took advantage of it," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "Chalk it up to inexperience."

The closest the Crusaders got after that was the final score — after Jacob Barit scored a layup with 55 seconds left.

Pape sat down with 3:35 left after scoring 17 points. Nip also had 17 points, including three 3-pointers.

"Vinny's probably been our most consistent player on offense," Mugiishi said. "He's always going to give you between 10 and 20 points every game. He's done a great job for us. And Kyle's done a great job for us on defense, too. We usually put him on the other team's biggest scoring threat."

Jack Miller led Saint Louis with 16 points and Elliot Purcell added 12 points.
