Mililani, Pearl City girls play to tie

MILILANI — In a result fitting for two O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division powerhouses, the Mililani and Pearl City girls soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie last night at Mililani.

Mililani senior forward Sarah Yoro and Pearl City senior halfback Chimene Sienkiewicz scored from similar areas on the field in the draw, helping the Trojans (6-0-1) and Chargers (5-0-1) remain atop the Western Division standings.

'Aiea's 6-0 win over Leilehua last night left Mililani and Pearl City as the only undefeated teams in the Western Division.

In the 25th minute, Yoro curled a direct kick from just outside the left side of the penalty box, and about eight yards off the endline. The shot bounced off Pearl City goalkeeper Amber Horn into the goal.

"I've been working on bends," said Yoro, who kicked the ball with the outside of her left foot. "I've been practicing them for a couple of years."

Sienkiewicz scored on an indirect kick in the 69th minute from about 15 yards away from the goal, inside the left side of the penalty box.

Sienkiewicz, on an assist from junior Lauren Maeshiro, blasted a shot into the upper right hand corner, off a play the Chargers worked on during the past three practices.

"Usually we chip it to the back door," Sienkiewicz said. "But the last game I had a similar shot, and (co-head coach Frank Baumholtz) told me to drive it and it went in, so I did it again."

It was that last match — a 3-0 Pearl City win over 'Aiea Tuesday — that both coaches said had an effect on last night's match.

"That gave them an advantage, coming off a big win like that," Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. "That gave them confidence, and it certainly showed tonight."

Baumholtz said Pearl City's game against 'Aiea affected the Chargers negatively in the first half against Mililani yesterday.

"I think it took us a half to get the lactic acid out of our legs," he said. "(Mililani) totally dominated.

"(Pearl City) just worked out the sore stuff. It's good we were able to come back, I'll be able to sleep tonight."
