107 vie for 4 berths in Sony Open

Advertiser Staff

More than 100 golfers will be competing for four spots in the Sony Open in Hawai'i during a qualifying tomorrow at Pearl Country Club.

The 107 golfers are from the PGA Tour, the Nationwide Tour, Japan, Fiji, Hawai'i and the Mainland. Qualifying begins at 7:10 a.m.

Among the 22 Hawai'i golfers will be Kevin Hayashi, who was paired with Michelle Wie in last year's Sony Open.

Hayashi qualified last year by being named the Aloha Section Player of the Year. Wie, as she did this year, received a sponsor's exemption.

Hawai'i's Norman-Ganin Asao, Parker McLachlin and Gregory Meyer also will try to qualify.

The Sony Open in Hawai'i will be played Thursday through Sunday at Waialae Country Club.

Sony events begin today with a free Kraft Foods Jr. Clinic, featuring Hawai'i's Dean Wilson and Jerry Kelly, the 2002 Sony Open champion.

Wilson is an alternate in this year's Sony.

The family golf clinic will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Waialae.

It is recommended that the public arrive at 3:30 p.m. to allow time for parking and registration.

Junior golfers will follow Wilson and Kelly as they demonstrate driving, pitching, chipping and putting.
