Stowell's late bucket lifts BYUH over HPU

Advertiser Staff

Michael Stowell saw his layup blocked but recovered the ball and banked in a 5-footer with 1.4 seconds remaining as Brigham Young-Hawai'i edged Hawai'i Pacific, 82-81, last night in a Pacific West Conference game at Cannon Activities Center.

Stowell drove the lane and his shot was blocked by Sea Warriors forward Audrius Peciukas. Stowell grabbed the loose ball and hit a turnaround over two HPU players.

"I just took it to the hoop and after I got blocked stayed with it and got it to go in," Stowell said in a press release.

Stowell, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, missed a free throw with 24 seconds remaining that would have tied the score at 81.

"I just didn't want the game to end with us losing because I missed that free throw," he said.

Austin Smylie had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead BYUH (6-4 overall, 1-0 PacWest). Jake Chrisman added 16 points and C.J. Fellars added 14 on 5-of-5 shooting. Stowell finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Gene Barnes scored 17 points for HPU (6-5, 0-1).
