Man arrested in fatal collision

Police arrested a 30-year-old man at his Nanakuli home for questioning in a negligent homicide investigation several hours after a head-on collision near the intersection of Hakimo Road and Waiolu Street Saturday night .

The man was booked for investigation of second-degree negligent homicide, failure to render aid and two outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

Alden Cambra, 22, died at Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Center shortly before 9 p.m. He was driving a 1988 Nissan Sentra that was struck about 8:30 p.m. by a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, which police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Lorenzo Ridela said was in the wrong lane.

A witness identified the Pontiac's driver, who fled the scene and was later arrested at home.

The arrested man told police his car had been stolen. He was at the main police station cellblock yesterday but is expected to be released pending further investigation.

Investigators said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.



Walker in fatal crash identified

The medical examiner's office yesterday identified a pedestrian who died Saturday at The Queen's Medical Center as Marcus Chong, 36.

Chong was struck by a car driven by a 25-year-old Nanakuli man at 4 a.m. Saturday while he was walking on the mauka shoulder of Farrington Highway near Lualei Place.

Police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.



Library to host live jazz show

Kapolei Public Library will host a live jazz performance featuring Louis Hayes & the Cannonball Legacy Band at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 22. Admission is free.

The program, entitled "Have A Hot Time with Some Cool Sounds: Jazz Music @ Your Library," will be on the second floor.

The 45-minute program, sponsored by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Outreach College's Statewide Cultural Extension Program, is suitable for ages 12 to adults. To request a sign-language interpreter, call the library five to seven days before the program.

Law students get free mini-classes

The William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai'i is launching J (January) Term this year, offering three mini-courses free to law-school students. The courses begin this week and run for three weeks, through the week ending Jan. 28.

Each of the three writing seminars is worth one credit and each is open by lottery to second- and third-year students.

The courses begin the week before classes start officially for law-school students but overlap with the spring semester by two weeks.

The courses will be taught by emeritus professor William B. Gould IV of Stanford Law School, who will teach Sports Law and Labor Law; professor Kent Greenfield of Boston College Law School, who will teach New Ideas in Corporate Law; and Harvard Law School's Morton Horwitz, who is the Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History, and will teach The Warren Court.



Play therapists plan conference

The Hawai'i Association for Play Therapy will hold its seventh annual conference Feb. 25 and 26 at the Radisson Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel.

The conference is aimed at professionals and paraprofessionals who need the latest information and practical skills and strategies for working with children and families.

Early registration is due by Jan. 27 and regular registration will be accepted until Feb. 18. The cost ranges from $135 for one day of the conference to $250 for both days.

Second suspect arrested in blast

Police have arrested a second suspect in a New Year's Day explosion in 'Aiea that injured an 11-year-old girl. A 35-year-old man was booked for investigation of first-degree reckless endangering and second-degree assault.

The suspect, as well as a 33-year-old man arrested Friday, have been released pending further investigation, police said.

Cydnee Somera suffered serious injuries to her left hand in the explosion in the 98-100 block of Kihale Street. She said she was standing on a bridge behind a parked car and saw three men detonate a bucket filled with sand, weighted material and other objects.



Man charged in 'Aiea holdup

A 34-year-old man was charged Saturday with armed robbery in connection with a holdup last Oct. 19 at an 'Aiea home on Kealalunina Drive.

Steven Chung, who was arrested Friday, was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail on the first-degree robbery charge. Chung and three other men allegedly demanded money and drugs from a 23-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman at the victims' home last October.

A sawed-off shotgun was used in the robbery. Police have made three arrests in the case.



Man last seen in Waikele sought

Peter Reyes

Honolulu police yesterday asked for the public's help in finding a missing man who his family fears is emotionally distraught. Peter Reyes, 34, was last seen Saturday about 1:30 p.m. driving away from Waikele Shopping Center.

He was in a brown Toyota pickup truck with license plate JYZ-712. He is 5 feet 7 and 142 pounds.

Witnesses are asked to call police missing persons investigator Phil Camero at 584-4444 or 529-3394, or to call 911.



Interfaith group meeting tonight

KAHULUI, Maui — The Maui Interfaith-Community Peace Coalition will hold an open meeting at 7 p.m. today to exchange ideas and plan more events during the coming year. The meeting will be in Maui Community College's Ka Lama Building, Room 102.

Members include representatives of different churches on Maui and two peace organizations that work to coordinate peace education activities. The coalition planned World Peace Day in September.
