WHALE COUNT 2005 Volunteer site leaders are needed on O'ahu and the Big Island for the humpback whale marine sanctuary's statewide ocean count Jan. 29, Feb. 26 and March 26. Leaders must be available for training from 2 to 4:30 p.m. or 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 15. MARSH RESTORATION The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning and restoring the Pouhala Marsh wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. To sign up, contact Pauline Kawamata at 955-0100, ext. 18.

FISHPOND STEWARDSHIP The Windward Ahupua'a Alliance's next Waikalua Loko Fishpond Community Stewardship Day will be Jan. 29, with registration and continental breakfast at 7:45 a.m. and pau hana lunch at noon. PROTECT NATIVE PLANTS Learn about rare native plants by volunteering to build trails, control invasive plants and plant native plants at the Pahole Natural Area Reserve. Reservations are required for the Feb. 5 Sierra Club service trip; call Reece Olayvar at 456-3049.

KANE'OHE WETLAND PROJECT Volunteers are needed Feb. 12 to help the Sierra Club clear mangrove from a wetland to create habitat for endangered waterbirds at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Kane'ohe Bay. Because the base is a secured military facility, volunteers must provide Social Security number in advance and bring a signed waiver. COMPUCYCLE Take old computers, monitors, printers, scanners, laptops, wireless phones and related gear to the CompuCycle computer recycling day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Old Airport Park Pavilion in Kailua- Kona. Appliances, stereos, TVs and other electronic equipment will not be accepted. Usable computer equipment will be refurbished and made available to schools and nonprofit groups. TOUR DE TRASH Sign up for a Tour de Trash bus tour of Oahu's trashier side, provided by the city's Refuse Division. The Workplace Recycling I tour, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Jan. 20, starts and finishes at the Sheraton Waikiki, whose owner saves $100,000 a year in disposal costs by recycling at its five O'ahu properties. Other stops include Hickam Air Force Base's materials recovery facility; the Ke'ehi Transfer Station on Middle Street; the Hawai'i Convention Center; the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which captures more than 1,000 tons of material annually; Island Recycling's multimaterial facilities; and Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant's recycling operations. O'AHU TREECYCLING Place trees at the curb for pickup on your regular twice-monthly yard-waste collection day, or take trees to city Refuse and Recycling Convenience Centers on Geiger Road in 'Ewa, Kamehameha Highway in La'ie, Wilikina Drive in Wahiawa, Plantation Road in Wai'anae, Hihimanu Street in Waimanalo, Waipahu Depot Road in Waipahu and Kawailoa Road in Hale'iwa, or Hawaiian Earth Products composting facilities at Campbell Industrial Park and on Kapa'a Quarry Road in Kailua. Condos and commercial buildings should call the city's Recycling Office at 692-5410 to arrange to haul trees directly to the composting facilities for free processing. MAUI TREECYCLING Take trees to Maui EKO Composting at the Central Maui Landfill on Pulehu Road, Olowalu Recycling Center, Hana Landfill, or Moloka'i Na'iwa Landfill. For more information, call the Recycling Section at (808) 270-7874.
