Customer faces forgery charge

A 23-year-old woman was arrested yesterday after she allegedly used a counterfeit bill while attempting to buy cigarettes at a Hawai'i Kai 7-Eleven store.

Police said the woman tried to pass the bogus bill about 3:15 p.m. but was detained until officers arrived to arrest her for suspicion of first-degree forgery.

She was later released without charges pending further investigation.

Man accused of stealing car

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of car theft early yesterday morning in a parking lot off Wilikina Drive in Wahiawa. Police said the suspect drove into the lot and was spotted by a witness who realized the car did not belong to the man.

The witness then called police and confronted the man who was standing next to the car. The man ran away, but police officers responding to the call found the man and confirmed the car had been reported stolen.

The witness identified the man as the one he had seen driving the car into the parking lot. The driver was arrested on suspicion of car theft.

2 boys arrested after car found

Two 16-year-old boys were arrested in 'Ewa Beach early yesterday on suspicion of car theft.

Patrol officers were responding to a report of a car break-in in progress when a caller told police two boys involved in the break-in had left the area in a tan Dodge Intrepid, which was stopped a short time later.

Police confirmed that a 21-year-old woman had reported the car stolen and officers arrested the two boys, who were later released pending further investigation.

Pedestrian on road to recovery

An elderly woman from the Kuakini area remained in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center this morning and appears to be recovering from injuries she received early yesterday after being hit by a car on South Kuakini Street, traffic investigators said today.

Police yesterday mistakenly said the woman had died after the 5:32 a.m. incident.

Police traffic investigators said the woman was hit by a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass station wagon while attempting to cross Kuakini about 155 feet east of Nu'uanu Avenue.

The woman was not in a marked crosswalk when she was hit and there are no crosswalks in the immediate area, investigators said. They said the woman was trying to cross the street from the mauka to the makai side when she was hit.

An 83-year-old man who was driving the station wagon west on Kuakini was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, police said. Speeding and the use of alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the incident, investigators said.
