Elderly woman struck by car

An elderly woman was critically injured yesterday morning after she stepped off the curb at the intersection of Kuakini Street and Nu'uanu Avenue about 5:30 a.m. and was hit by a passing car.

The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, police said.



Fire damages vacant building

Fire damaged a vacant building next to Waipahu Elementary School last night.

The blaze was reported shortly before 10 p.m. and brought under control at 10:08 p.m. Damage was confined to the rear of the building, which neighbors said once was a church.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the building is scheduled to be demolished and that homeless people may have been using it.

No adjacent properties were damaged.



Van hits woman fleeing store

A 27-year-old woman was seriously injured at Pearlridge Center Sunday after she ran from one of the stores and was hit by a van, police said.

The woman is suspected of stealing items from one of the stores. The woman ran toward the van about 5:30 p.m. but slipped and was struck as she attempted to enter it, police said. The man driving the van took off, running over the woman, police said.

The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and was in serious condition with broken ribs and head injuries, police said.

When she recovers sufficiently, the woman will probably be charged with second-degree theft, police said.



Woman held in fraud, theft case

Charges of forgery, identity theft and theft are pending against a 42-year-old O'ahu woman who allegedly tried to use a stolen check and bogus identification documents to purchase items at the Royal Kunia Wal-Mart store Sunday.

A clerk noticed irregularities in the check and the state identification card the woman was using when she went through a checkout lane about 4:40 p.m.

Store security workers detained the woman until police arrived and arrested her.



Wai'anae man held in break-in

A 28-year-old Wai'anae man was arrested as a suspect in a home break-in Manoa early yesterday morning.

A 32-year-old woman told police she was sleeping in her home about 3:20 a.m. when she heard her bedroom door open, saw a flashlight beam and heard someone running down the hallway.

The woman called police who determined the intruder had entered through an unlocked back door and that the woman's cellular telephone had been taken.

Police found the suspect nearby, seized the cell phone and arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree burglary.



Woman held in stolen-car case

A 24-year-old Wai'anae woman was arrested about 11 p.m. Sunday night in Wai'anae as a suspect in a stolen-car case.

A patrol officer noticed the woman was driving the car without its headlights on. The officer turned on his flashing lights, ordered the driver to pull over and checked on the car's registration.

After learning the car had been reported stolen, the officer arrested the driver for suspicion of unlawful control of a propelled vehicle.



Missing Waikele man found

Police found a 34-year-old Waikele man yesterday who was reported missing by family members Saturday.

Peter Reyes was located by police at 1:30 p.m. yesterday, police said. Police did not say where he was found. Police said he had no physical injuries but needed medical attention.

Reyes was last seen Saturday at 1:30 p.m. driving away from the Waikele Shopping Center.


Correction: Peter Reyes, 34, who was found Monday after being reported missing the previous Saturday, was not taken to a hospital after he was located. A previous version of this story contained incorrect information.
