HPU to hold 59th commencement

Hawai'i Pacific University will confer associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees on nearly 600 students at the university's 59th commencement at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Waikiki Shell.

Dr. Bruce Anderson, president of Oceanic Institute, will deliver the commencement speech and receive the Fellow of the Pacific Award, the university's highest accolade.

Valedictory speakers include: Daniel Wagner, a native of Ecuador; Malia Smith from Hawai'i; and Senior Chief Petty Officer Mark Brahler from Ohio.



Group hosts talk on boating safety

Hawaiian Ocean Safety Team will host a free power boat safety seminar from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 22 at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary conference room.

Advance registration is required for this event sponsored by the Hawai'i Ocean Safety Team, a nonprofit organization founded to promote stewardship of Hawai'i's waters and to enhance ocean safety.

The seminar is the first in a series addressing small power-boat safety issues.

O'AHU

Housing sought for Japan visitors

The Friendship Force of Honolulu is seeking volunteers to provide room and board for a group of 18 Japanese visitors who will be on O'ahu from Feb. 16 to 23.

Friendship Force is an international exchange program that hosts visitors from around the world several times a year. Members can then become guests in homes in more than 60 nations.

The group is a nonprofit not affiliated with any religious or political organization.

Farmers' Market hours changing

The Kailua Thursday Night Farmers' Market is changing its hours and will be open from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the parking structure behind Longs Drug Store.

$5,000 available for Windward

A Kailua church has $5,000 in grant money to award to a program or group of programs able to make meaningful progress in dealing with homelessness or drug addiction on the Windward side, from Makapu'u to Kualoa.

Christ Church Uniting Disciples and Presbyterians will conduct a competition for the grant that will be awarded Easter Sunday, March 27.

The Easter Grant Competition is looking for creative ideas to address the two issues, said Pastor Buddy Summers, of Christ Church Uniting.

Applications for the grant will be available at the church office Friday.

The deadline to submit an application is March 1. The church is at 1300 Kailua Road. For more information call Summers at 780-1583, or the church at 262-6911.



WAIKIKI

Nalani Olds talks on Lili'uokalani

Entertainer and historian Nalani Olds will discuss "The Queen's Songbook," a book about Queen Lili'uokalani during a free lecture at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paokalani Ave.

The book includes 55 songs by Lili'uokalani, an essay about her life and music, historical commentary, chronologies, translations and photographs.

KALIHI

Housing project gets $10,550

More than 120 members of the Professional Convention Management Association raised $10,550 to benefit Kalihi Valley Housing and worked last weekend to beautify the state housing project.

The work is part of the association's Helping Hands project, which allows members to travel off site during their annual convention and perform hands-on community service.

Members spent four hours Sunday painting the recreation and community center, basketball court and office building at Kalihi Valley Housing, which is home for more than 2,000 low-income residents.



KAUA'I

Marine mammal aid group meets

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Hawaiian Islands Stranding Response Group, which is made up of volunteers who respond to marine mammals that are stranded or in distress, will hold organizational meetings Saturday on Kaua'i.

The sessions are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at Hanalei Canoe Club and 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Radisson Kaua'i Beach Hotel's Orchid-Hibiscus Room.
