Woman found safe at Makapu'u

Firefighters from the Hawai'i Kai station found a woman, who had been the object of an air and ground search last night, about 7:15 this morning near the top of a trail that descends from the Makapu'u Lighthouse to the shoreline.

"A ground grew made contact with her and assisted her in walking out," said Capt. Kenison Tejada, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

Tejada said the woman appeared to have some minor scratches and bruises and was checked by city emergency medical services technicians before being released.

The woman's boyfriend, 43, called police last night to report the woman missing. He told police that he and his girlfriend had gone to fish in the tidal pools at the base of the Makapu'u cliffs about 10 a.m. yesterday and left about 6 p.m. in hopes of getting back to their van before dark.

The man said he decided to hike out "the long way," hugging the shoreline, because he had been knocked down by a wave earlier and injured his knee. His girlfriend decided to take a more direct route by hiking back up the same trail the pair had used to hike down to the fishing area, the man told police.

He said he expected his girlfriend to be waiting for him when he arrived back at the van which was parked on the road leading to Makapu'u lighthouse.

He waited for a while and called police when his girlfriend failed to show up. Police and firefighters searched the area last night until about 9 p.m. with the aid of a Fire Department helicopter but could not find the woman.

The search resumed at daybreak today and the woman was found a short time later, Tejada said.
