ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Psst, Dave: Play us some Beat stuff

Advertiser Staff and News Services

We're praying to the gods of sweet '80s music that Dave Wakeling finds it in his heart to throw down some English Beat at the Pipeline Cafe tonight.

He's touring as General Public (the band he formed with fellow English Beat alum Ranking Roger in '84). A lot of us were too young to catch the Beat when "Mirror In The Bathroom" and "Save It For Later" were tunes only the cool college kids listened to. "Tenderness" still grooves us, Dave. But a live dose of "I Confess" wouldn't hurt, either. Show at 8 p.m.; tickets are $15 advance, $20 at the door. Call (877) 750-4400.

Praises for Miss Brazil

A Sunset Beach boutique is getting national exposure in the January issue of Lucky magazine — a read geared toward shopoholics. The shop, Miss Brazil, is praised in the mag's Shops We Love feature.

"This North Shore beach shack has the best assortment of Brazilian bikinis, vintage Hawaiian-print beach towels, canvas purses with wooden handles and hippie jewelry," raved Jennifer Smith, senior fashion editor.

Miss Brazil: 741-5197.

FINAL WORD

Rocker Alanis Morissette | on starring as herself in Comedy Central's upcoming "We're With the Band":

"A lot of people presume that I'm meditating five hours a day and that I'm a vegan and I'm one-dimensionally spiritually minded and I've transcended my humanity, and while that's a great aspiration (laughs) — it's not altogether true."
