This week at Waialae Country Club, the 15-year-old Punahou School sophomore will give another glimpse as to whether that unfathomable future is any closer to becoming reality.
Wie will be playing in the Sony Open in Hawai'i, the first full-field stop of the 2005 PGA Tour season, on a sponsor's exemption. Last year at the same event, she captured the attention of the world by becoming the first female to shoot under par and in the 60s in a PGA Tour tournament.
"I had such a great experience last year," Wie said. "Hopefully, I'll do a lot better. My goal is to be in the top 20."
Wie's second-round 2-under 68 last year gave her a two-round total of 140 (even par). She missed the cut by one, beating 48 men in the field.
Wie went on to make the cut in all seven of her LPGA appearances of 2004. She finished fourth in an LPGA major, became the youngest to compete in the Curtis Cup in England, and became the youngest winner of the Laureus World Sports Award for Newcomer of the Year.
An amateur golfer, she turned down more than $250,000 in LPGA earnings she would have won if she were a professional.
