Motorcyclist critically injured

Advertiser Staff

Police closed Kaukonahua Road yesterday afternoon for almost two hours following a motorcycle accident that left a Waikiki man critically injured.

The 30-year-old man was riding a black 2000 Suzuki motorcycle west on Kaukonahua Road between the junctions of Wilikina Drive and Kaimananui Road about 3 p.m. when he drifted to the grassy right shoulder and hit the ground, police said. The man was taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

Witnesses told police that the man did not appear to be speeding.

Woman found safe at Makapu'u

Firefighters from the Hawai'i Kai station found a woman, who had been the object of an air and ground search Tuesday night, about 7:15 yesterday morning near the top of a trail that descends from the Makapu'u Lighthouse to the shoreline.

"A ground crew made contact with her and assisted her in walking out," said fire Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Tejada said the woman appeared to have some minor scratches and bruises and was checked by medical personnel before being released.

The woman's boyfriend called police Tuesday night to report the woman missing. He told police that he and his girlfriend had gone to fish in the tidal pools at the base of the Makapu'u cliffs about 10 a.m. Tuesday and left about 6 p.m.

The man said he decided to hike out along the shoreline because he had an injured knee. His girlfriend decided to take a more direct route by hiking back up the same trail the pair had used to hike down to the fishing area, the man told police.
