Register today for Priory test

St. Andrew's Priory School students interested in testing for the Queen Emma Merit Scholarships must register today for the Monday test.

The scholarships are awarded to one entering sixth-grader, two entering seventh-graders and two entering ninth-graders. The renewable scholarships pay half their tuition to the Priory.

Scholarships will be awarded based on students' academic achievement, motivation and extracurricular involvement.

Library hosting origami workshop

With Valentine's Day coming up, Kahuku Public & School library is hosting an "Origamic Architecture" workshop that will teach attendees how to make pop-up greeting cards.

The 90-minute workshop, led by Yuko Miyashiro, will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 in the library conference room.

Participants age 12 and over will receive free kits.

The workshop is limited to the first 12 people on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sign up at the library's reference desk to reserve your place. Call the library five to seven days before the event to request a sign-language interpreter.



Schools join up for performances

Four schools will perform hula, mele and oli at the Kamehameha Schools auditorium this weekend.

This is the second year Kamehameha has joined with Mid-Pacific Institute, Halau Lokahi and Kailua High School for Ku Mai Ka Lama 'Opio.

The performances will be held at 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday and at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Moanalua PTSA to hold banquet

Moanalua High School's Parent, Teacher and Student Association will be have its first Menehune Kina'ole Awards banquet on Feb. 24 to help raise money for the school.

The awards will be held at the Honolulu Country Club in Salt Lake.

Honorees include educator Calvin Shimomura, Moanalua Class of '75; and professional golfer and golf instructor Casey Nakama, Class of '76.

A special award of thanks will also be bestowed on Samuel T. Fujikawa, executive vice president of Continental Mechanical, for his support of the school.

The event will feature entertainment by the school's music department and a video produced by students in the audio-visual program. A silent auction will also be held.

Individual tickets are $100. Donations and various sponsorship levels are available for tables of 12 guests. The event will provide money to cover various school expenses, from textbooks and supplies, to fans and air conditioners and other needs identified by the faculty, staff and students.

East-West fellow awarded grant

Dieter Ernst, an East-West Center senior fellow, has been awarded a $425,500 grant from the Volkswagen Foundation to study global design networks in the semiconductor industry and the relocation of science-based work from China and East Asia.

Ernst is a specialist on the impact of globalization and information technology on economic growth and will be looking at the outsourcing to Asia of jobs requiring advanced technical knowledge.

He is sharing the grant for the two-year research project with Boy Luethje, a professor at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, Germany.

The research will provide policymakers in the Asia-Pacific region information about the root causes and impacts of the relocation of knowledge work to Asia.



Register tomorrow for study in France

Tomorrow is the deadline to apply for Kapi'olani Community College's new study abroad program in Avignon in the South of France this June.

The four-week program will allow students to study beginning or intermediate French and earn credits for two semesters of work.

Students will learn French through film and cuisine, and take several excursions in the Provence and an excursion to Lyon and Paris.

They will stay with French families and be provided two meals a day. KCC French instructor Renee Arnold will accompany the students.

Scholarships for gay students

The Point Foundation will offer 10 college scholarships for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered youth in 2005.

Point Scholars are chosen for leadership, scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, involvement in the gay and lesbian community and financial or emotional need.

Point Foundation will offer three additional scholarships to undergraduates at American University in Washington, D.C., and five scholarships to San Diego-area residents.
