Sinkhole closes section of road in Kailua

Police closed Hamakua Drive in both directions between Kailua Road and Hekili Street in Kailua this morning because of a large sinkhole in the middle of the street.The 3- to 5-foot hole was discovered about 6:30 a.m. and is about 10 to 20 feet deep, police said.
The problem may have been caused by a broken water or sewer line, police said.
The city and a contractor working nearby are assessing the situation.
