Jake Chrisman scored a game-high 31 points as Brigham Young-Hawai'i upended 19th-ranked Hawai'i-Hilo, 90-87, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
Chrisman hit 12 of 14 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line to lift the Seasiders (7-4 overall, 2-0 PacWest).
Austin Smylie added 18 points for BYUH.
Osadonor Esene scored 24 points, Alex Cabagnot 22, Justin Dobson 16 and Brian Graham 15 for the Vulcans (15-2, 3-2), who shot 64 percent (32 of 50) in the loss.
Hilo led 87-86 and had the possession with 10.4 seconds to play. But Shawn Opunui deflected the Vulcans' inbounds pass to Smylie, who scored on a layup.
Esene then drove the length of the court, but was called for an offensive foul with 3.3 seconds remaining. Opunui sank two free throws for the final margin although the Seasiders could not celebrate until Cabagnot barely missed a shot from half court as time expired.
Elsewhere in the PacWest last night, Chris Reeves had 21 points and seven rebounds as Chaminade defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 81-65, at McCabe Gym.
Zack Whiting added 19 points and Corey Campbell 16 for the Silverswords (11-5, 5-1).
Aleksander Botic scored 20 points to lead the Sea Warriors (7-6, 1-2).
