Top amateurs set to box in Hawai'i

The state's best amateur fighters will go toe-to-toe tonight and tomorrow night at the Hawai'i-U.S.A. Amateur Boxing Championships at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i-Kane'ohe.

Bouts on both nights at the E Club will begin at 7.

Winners of the single-elimination tournament advance to the U.S. Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 15 to 19.

Defending champions scheduled to compete are Jeffrey Pelen Jr. (141, Wai'anae Boxing Club), Brent Rodrigues (152, Palolo B.C.), Zach Illarazza (165, Wailuku B.C.), Chris Downs (178), Ryan Bolen (201, Kawano/Tiki Ent. B.C.), and Tinei Su'a (201-plus, Kawano/Tiki Ent. B.C.).

Rodrigues will be seeking his fourth consecutive title.

TENNIS

Registration deadline today for 1-2-3 classes

The United States Tennis Association Hawai'i Pacific Section will start the next session of its 1-2-3 classes beginning the week of Jan. 24.

Classes for novice, beginner, intermediate and advanced players are taught by certified instructors at most local tennis courts in all districts.

YOGA

Isle's first regional event tomorrow

Hawai'i first Regional Yoga Championship will be held tomorrow at Bikram's Yoga College of India in Kaimuki.

The competition will be held 1 p.m. at 1151B 12th Ave., and is open to all yoga disciplines.

Entry fee is $25. Admission is free.

The competition is judged on the yoga postures, poise and gracefulness. Contestants are judged on the completion of seven asanas (postures) in three minutes. The first five postures are: standing head to knee, standing bow, bow, rabbit and stretching posture. The final postures are chosen by the contestant.

Qualifying delegates will go on to the International Yoga Asana Championship-Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup next month.
