Buddhism topic of Feb. 12 lecture

Lama Rinchen Wangyel, a visiting lama from Bhutan, will discuss his area's Buddhism and Georgiana Cook from Maui will provide background information about Tibetan Buddhism on Feb. 12 at the Honpa Hongwanji, 1727 Pali Highway.
Cook's presentation will be at 9 a.m., and the lama will talk at 10:45 a.m. The moderator will be George Tanabe.
The free lecture is part of the Futuba Kenko Memorial Lecture series.

Robert Grant will hold a "Compassion, Fatigue & Burnout Workshop" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 16 at Chaminade University's Mystical Rose Oratory.
Grant is a psychologist and expert in the area of post-traumatic stress.
The cost is $10 ($15 at the door), including coffee, tea and light refreshments. Those who register before April 11 can also receive a box lunch.

Katherine Meyer will present a free lecture, "Shared Challenges for Catholics and Muslims in a Globalized World," as part of the Mackey Marianist Lecture series at 4 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Mystical Rose Oratory on the Chaminade University campus.
Meyer, who studied the religions and sociology of the Middle East, will discuss the intersections of sociological development, democratic movements and Islam.
She holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and has done post-doctoral studies at John Hopkins University in Baltimore.

"A Jodo Shinshu Gathering: Dharma Through the Senses," a two-day retreat at St. Anthony's Retreat Center, 3351 Kalihi St., will be held Feb. 19 to 20, presented by the Buddhist Study Center.
The retreat will begin at 8 a.m. Feb. 19 through 6 p.m. Feb. 20.
The cost is $75 before Feb. 7 ($80 after that; lodging extra), and includes meals.

The Church of the Crossroads is hosting a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. service and celebration and will present peacemaker awards at 7 p.m. Monday at the church, 1212 University Ave.
The Hawaii Lifetime Peacemaker Award will be given to Glenn Paige, professor emeritus of the University of Hawai'i and founder of the Center for Global Nonviolence. Paige has written more than 10 books, most recently "Non-killing Global Political Science."
The Hawai'i Peacemaker Award will go to Chuck "Doc" Burrows, a leader in the restoration of Kawai Nui Marsh.

A two-hour, islandwide Prayer Watch worship and prayer service will be held 7 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center on the UH-Manoa campus.
