Radford stops Campbell

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Campbell High School boys basketball team's chase for an O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship hit a surprising roadblock last night, as visiting Radford rallied past the Sabers, 63-55.

The Sabers, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, fell to 3-1 in the OIA Western Division. The unranked Rams improved to 3-0.

"We all had faith that we could do it, and we knew we just had to play together," said Radford senior Will Kerins, who scored nine of his 14 points in the pivotal fourth period. "If we could just keep putting those two things together, we knew we could come out with the win."

It certainly took perseverance, as Campbell led for the game's first 26 minutes, by as much as 42-28 with 2:16 remaining in the third period.

But the Rams closed to 44-38 by the end of the quarter, and Mike Sooto's reverse layup tied it at 46-46 with 5:25 left. Kerins' 3-pointer a minute later gave Radford its first lead at 49-48, but the teams traded baskets until another 3-pointer by Kerins gave the Rams the lead for good at 56-54 with 1:30 remaining.

Radford then made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"Will's a senior, and he wanted it bad," Rams coach Kai Enos said of Kerins. "But all of our guys played a big role. Even the guys on the bench — they kept us going even when we were down by a lot."

The Sabers, who defeated No. 2 Punahou 61-53 on Dec. 3, jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first two minutes. With 6-foot-8 center Daniel Phillips and 6-3 Ikaika Shelton controlling the inside and Tristan Bailey (game-high 16 points) raining in shots from the outside, Campbell appeared to be in control.

But in the fateful fourth period, the Rams got hot and the Sabers went cold.

"We missed shots at the end, and against a team like Radford that is well-coached with good players ..." said Campbell coach Sol Batoon.
