Lingle releases $1 million for work at rehab center in Liliha

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $1 million in general obligation bond money for renovation and improvement of the Ho'opono Annex of the Lanakila Rehabilitation Center in Liliha.

The project cost is $6.7 million. The Lanakila Rehabilitation Center building is owned by the state and leased to a nonprofit agency. The Ho'opono Annex is used for adult day services, life-skill building programs for the disabled and the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers meals to people in need.

The building has not had a major renovation since it was built 35 years ago. The renovation is being done in two phases. The first phase consists of renovating the first floor to comply with health and safety standards and to expand the kitchen and meal preparation area to meet increased demands on the Meals on Wheels program. The second phase will involve renovating the second floor, including redesign of the adult daycare services area, construction of living and educational spaces, and a new roof.

Other improvements will be made to bring the building up to mechanical, building, fire, electrical, and disability access codes.

The state share of the money is being matched with $2.8 million in federal money. The center hopes to raise $2.4 million more from private donors.
