Kalaheo boys rally past Moanalua, 54-47

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

So much for talk about Kalaheo High School's "down year" in boys basketball.

The Mustangs are back in their usual place atop the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division standings, after rallying for a 54-47 victory over Moanalua last night.

Kalaheo, ranked No. 10 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 4-0 in the OIA East by handing unranked Moanalua (3-1) its first loss.

The Mustangs — with three state championships and 16 OIA title banners hanging on their gym wall — have won four league crowns in a row but return only two players with significant varsity experience. After a few lopsided losses in December tournaments, Kalaheo appeared to be ripe for a plunge down the OIA standings.

"But I guess nobody told them that," Moanalua coach Dan Hale said. "Their whole group really stepped up and executed in those last few minutes. They looked like the Kalaheo of old."

After trailing by as many as nine points early in the second half, the Mustangs turned loose their signature full-court zone trap press in the fourth period and closed to 43-42 on David Moore's 3-pointer with four minutes remaining.

About 50 seconds later, Elias David banked in a 12-footer to put Kalaheo up for good at 44-43. Chris Tumaneng's free throw with 51 seconds left ended a 15-0 run and opened the lead to 52-43.

"The main thing is our team defense," Moore said. "We weren't having a good shooting night, but we finally picked up our defensive level and were able to get points off that."

Menehunes guard Zach Pendergast, who finished with a game-high 20 points, drained a 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining to cut it to 52-46, and point guard Jay Yoshizawa was fouled on a 3-point attempt with the score the same and 12 seconds remaining.

But Yoshizawa missed his first free throw, made the second and Moanalua could not grab the rebound off the third.

Tumaneng sank two free throws with six seconds remaining to seal it.

"When we got (the deficit) down to five, we went to the zone trap and I said, 'Let's make a run now,' " Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "We made some stops and finally got guys to make some plays on offense."

Kalaheo's leading scorer in 2004, Sam Wilhoite, graduated and its top returning scorer, Theo Fujita, unexpectedly transferred to a school in New Jersey in August.

"That hurt, because he was the one legitimate scorer we would have had back," Furtado said of Fujita, who played three varsity seasons.
