Hilo beats HPU in PacWest

Alex Cabagnot scored 19 points and Hawai'i-Hilo scored the final eight points in a 68-58 victory over Hawai'i Pacific last night in a Pacific West Conference basketball game at Mid-Pacific Institute gym.

Osadonor Esene added 18 points and seven rebounds for No. 19 Hilo, which improved to 16-2 overall and 4-2 in the PacWest.

Audrius Peciukas had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Dante Sykes added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for HPU (7-7 and 1-3).



GOLF

Turtle Bay will hold senior qualifying

Turtle Bay Resorts has offered a sponsor's exemption for its Champions Tour season opener to a local senior golf professional in a special qualifying Wednesday morning starting at 7 a.m. at the Palmer Course.

Hale Irwin is the defending champion in the Turtle Bay Championship, which will be held Jan. 28 to 30.



PADDLING

Look fund-raising auction postponed

A fund-raising auction scheduled for today to help canoe paddler Leighton Look has been postponed.

The auction will be held Jan. 30 at Ocean Club from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Look, a long-time paddler and coach for Hui Lanakila Canoe Club, has been in Kuakini Medical Center since October. A diving accident led to a severe case of the bends, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
