High surf expected through tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

A high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of all islands will continue through tomorrow, the National Weather Service said.

Forecasters said a very large, northwest swell will result in high surf along those shorelines.

The latest information indicates the swell will peak on Kaua'i and O'ahu today and will decline slowly beginning tomorrow.

The swell, estimated to be in the 21- to 23-foot range, will result in dangerously high surf through at least tomorrow on Maui and the Big Island, forecasters said.

A high surf warning means damaging surf is expected or occurring along the affected shorelines and that coastal flooding is possible.

As of about 10 a.m. today, police and fire officials on O'ahu said surf along the North Shore and parts of the leeward coastline appears to be building but had not caused any damage or road closures.

The National Weather Service advised curious onlookers to avoid venturing near ocean waters due to dangerous waves and strong rip currents.
