ALOHA 'AINA CLEANUP Maui's Community Work Day program is sponsoring the countywide Aloha 'Aina cleanup from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at parks, beaches, boat ramps, roadways and other locations. FISHPOND STEWARDSHIP The Windward Ahupua'a Alliance's next Waikalua Loko Fishpond Community Stewardship Day will be Jan. 29, with registration and continental breakfast at 7:45 a.m. and pau hana lunch at noon. BLUE WATER RESPONSE TEAM Free training for the Sierra Club's Blue Water Campaign will be 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 5 at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Sanctuary offices, 6600 Kalanaiana'ole Highway, third-floor conference room. PROTECT NATIVE PLANTS Learn about rare native plants by volunteering to build trails, control invasive plants and plant native plants at the Pahole Natural Area Reserve. Reservations are required for the Feb. 5 Sierra Club service trip; call Reece Olayvar at 456-3049.
KANE'OHE WETLAND PROJECT Volunteers are needed Feb. 12 to help the Sierra Club clear mangrove from a wetland to create habitat for endangered waterbirds at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Kane'ohe Bay. Because the base is a secured military facility, volunteers must provide Social Security number in advance and bring a signed waiver. MARSH RESTORATION The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning and restoring the Pouhala Marsh wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. TOUR DE TRASH Sign up for a bus tour of Oahu's trashier side, provided by the city's Refuse Division. The Workplace Recycling I tour, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, starts and finishes at the Sheraton Waikiki, whose owner saves $100,000 a year in disposal costs by recycling at its five O'ahu properties. Other stops include Hickam Air Force Base's materials recovery facility; the Ke'ehi Transfer Station on Middle Street; the Hawai'i Convention Center; the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which captures more than 1,000 tons of material annually; Island Recycling's facilities; and Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant's recycling operations. COMPUSWAP Recycle used computer equipment at the Maui Community Work Day's CompuSwap event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at the War Memorial Complex. Working systems will be donated to schools and other nonprofits. A "scavenger" area will be open for those seeking parts. COMPUCYCLE Take old computers, monitors, printers, scanners, laptops, wireless phones and related gear to the CompuCycle computer recycling day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Old Airport Park Pavilion in Kailua- Kona. Appliances, stereos, TVs and other electronic equipment will not be accepted. Usable computer equipment will be refurbished and made available to schools and nonprofit groups.
