Woman found in car identified

HILO, Hawai'i — Police have identified a 54-year-old woman whose body was found Sunday in a car submerged off the Pohoiki Boat Ramp at the Isaac Hale Beach Park in Puna.

The woman was Janet Ruth Harless of Hawaiian Beaches. Police said they do not believe foul play was involved in her death.

Police were called to the boat ramp at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and Puna patrol officers found the woman inside the submerged 1995 Ford Thunderbird two-door coupe. Detectives have ordered an autopsy.

Police are asking that anyone who saw Harless' purple Thunderbird operating in the vicinity of Pohoiki early Sunday, or who have any information about the incident, to call Detective Juergen Canda at 961-2381 or the police nonemergency number at 935-3311.



Waikiki drowning victim identified

A man whose body was found Saturday floating in ocean waters off Waikiki has been identified by the city medical examiner's office as Wesley Henderson, 61, of British Columbia, Canada.

Lifeguards discovered the body floating face down at 4:19 p.m. Henderson was pulled from the water and lifeguards tried to revive him, police said.



Accidents close Likelike lanes

The Kane'ohe-bound lanes of Likelike Highway were closed for about an hour yesterday afternoon following several traffic accidents in the Wilson Tunnel.

No one was seriously injured in the incidents, but police turned traffic around at Valley View Drive while the cars involved in the accidents were removed. The highway was closed about 5:30 p.m. and reopened about 6:20.



Fire on Maui investigated

KIHEI, Maui — Police were investigating a suspicious early morning fire yesterday that burned an awning and some tables and chairs at a restaurant.

The 4:05 a.m. fire caused $20,000 damage to Sorrento's near the Mana Kai Resort on South Kihei Road, fire officials said.

Witnesses said they heard explosions and saw someone running from the scene.



Police looking for purse snatcher

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy and are looking for a man in his early 20s in a purse-snatching Sunday night in Waikiki.

A 21-year-old man told police he was walking with his girlfriend about 11:10 p.m. on Hobron Lane and was carrying her purse when the man and boy approached them. The boy grabbed the purse and ran.

The male victim ran after the pair, had a water bottle thrown at him and was punched in the face by the younger of the two assailants.

A police officer saw the confrontation, ran after the assailants, caught the younger one and recovered the purse with its contents intact. The older suspect got away.



Car break-in results in 2 arrests

Two men, both 22, were arrested Sunday night as suspects in a car break-in in Halawa.

Police said a witness watched as the men drove up next to a car and began removing items from it. One of the men went to the back of the car and acted as a lookout, police said.

Police stopped the two men as they were pulling away, contacted the registered owner of the car and had him identify items found in the car.



Car theft suspect caught in Kaimuki

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Kaimuki Sunday for allegedly driving a stolen car.

Police said a patrol officer spotted a Toyota Camry about 1:25 a.m. on Wai'alae Avenue without a safety sticker. The officer checked the license plate attached to the car and found it belonged to a different vehicle.

The officer ordered the driver to pull over, ran a check on the car's vehicle identification number and learned a 49-year-old man had reported the car stolen.
