Spurs shut down Wizards

SAN ANTONIO Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs figured out a way to slow down the Washington Wizards' high-scoring offense.
Eric Gay Associated Press The Spurs, who have the best defense in the NBA, limited the Wizards to season lows for points and shooting percentage (31.8 percent). Washington had scored 100 or more points in its last 10 games.
Gilbert Arenas, Washington's high scorer at 23.2 points per game, missed all 12 of his shots from the floor and finished with three points, while Antawn Jamison (20.3 ppg) scored six points on 2-for-8 shooting.
"I just tried to stay in front of him the whole game and stay in his face," said Parker, who guarded Arenas.
San Antonio jumped to a 21-2 lead, and the Wizards were not able to get any closer than 13 points in their first loss of 2005.
Jazz beat Lakers; Bryant out for two more weeks
LOS ANGELES Matt Harpring scored 19 points, Raja Bell had 14 of his 16 in the fourth quarter and Utah beat the Los Angeles Lakers, 102-94, for just its fourth win in 18 games.
Harpring also had seven rebounds and six assists. Carlos Boozer added 18 points and Gordan Giricek scored 15 for the Jazz.
Caron Butler led the Lakers with 26 points and six rebounds. Chucky Atkins scored 18 points, Brian Cook and Tierre Brown added 11 each and Lamar Odom had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Lakers played their second game without star Kobe Bryant, who sustained a severely sprained right ankle in the first quarter of a 98-94 victory over Cleveland last Thursday night.
Team spokesman John Black said before the game that Bryant will be sidelined at least two more weeks, with no target date set for his return.
Pistons 94, Suns 80 DETROIT Tayshaun Prince scored a career-high 26 points to lead Detroit past Phoenix, handing the NBA-leading Suns' their fourth straight loss. The Suns were held to a season-low point total and clearly missed Steve Nash, who was sidelined for a second consecutive game with a bruised left thigh. The point guard hopes to play tomorrow at home against Memphis. Joe Johnson led the Suns with 17 points.
MINNEAPOLIS Donyell Marshall made six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, leading Toronto to its first win in Minnesota in team history. Marshall, the Timberwolves' first-round draft choice in 1994, scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Raptors won for the first time in nine tries in Minnesota since entering the NBA in the 1995-96 season.
NEW YORK Ben Gordon scored on a driving 8-footer with one-tenth of a second remaining to give Chicago a victory over the Knicks, extending the Bulls' winning streak to seven games.
The string of victories is the longest for Chicago since the 1997-98 team won 13 straight. Luol Deng led Chicago with 19 points.
OAKLAND, Calif. Jason Richardson scored a career-high 42 points for Golden State in his first game back from a sprained ankle. The Warriors ended a nine-game losing streak. He scored 30 or more in consecutive games for the first time in his career. He had 35 points in a 111-105 win over Toronto on Dec. 29, Golden State's last victory.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Michael Redd scored 27 points to help Milwaukee break its four-game losing streak with a victory over the Bobcats. Dan Gadzuric had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks.
PHILADELPHIA Kenny Thomas had 21 points and 15 rebounds, Allen Iverson scored 29, and the 76ers nearly wasted a 25-point lead in the fourth quarter before beating New Orleans.
LOS ANGELES Chris Webber scored 23 points and Cuttino Mobley hit a 3-pointer with 59.6 seconds left to lift Sacramento.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. Stromile Swift scored 18 points and Jason Williams added 16 to lead the Grizzlies to their ninth win in 10 games.
ATLANTA Jason Kidd scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half, and New Jersey ended a four-game losing streak with a win over the Hawks.
Devin Brown scored 24 points, Parker added 23 and the Spurs stifled Washington's top scorers in a 101-73 victory, snapping the Wizards' seven-game winning streak last night.
