Miners have been less than hospitable

The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team will not play Texas-El Paso until tomorrow, but the games have already started.

The Rainbow Warriors arrived in El Paso, Texas, on Monday morning, but they have not been allowed to practice on the UTEP campus for the last two days.

"They said they didn't have anything available for us until (today)," Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace said. "But you have to wonder about that."

The 'Bows and Miners will play a Western Athletic Conference game at the Don Haskins Center at 4:05 p.m. (Hawai'i time) tomorrow.

Wallace was hoping to get three practices in the Haskins Center, but instead will only get in there today. The 'Bows practiced at a nearby high school gym Monday, and then drove 45 minutes to Las Cruces, N.M., last night to practice at New Mexico State's on-campus arena.

Wallace is a friend of New Mexico State basketball coach Lou Henson. The Aggies will join the WAC next season.

"We have to make that drive and play in that gym next year, so it worked out well," Wallace said.

But when it comes to scheduling, the 'Bows and UTEP have not been working well together.

Last season, UTEP did not accommodate Hawai'i's request to change a game in El Paso. As a result, the 'Bows played a Bracket Buster game at 11 p.m. at Southern Illinois, and then played at UTEP less than 48 hours later.

The 'Bows will return the favor next month when UTEP will have to play a Bracket Buster road game and then travel to Hawai'i for a WAC game two days later.

"They said they couldn't help us out last year, so we weren't about to change things around for them this year," Wallace said.

In any case, Wallace said the facilities have not prevented his team from preparing for the Miners.

"We know it'll be a tough game," he said. "We got after it (yesterday) and the team seemed really focused."
