Hawai'i part of livestock tracking program

SPOKANE, Wash. — Livestock producers in Hawai'i and six other Western states have started a pilot program to track their animals from birth to death, part of a move to safeguard consumers and herds from mad cow disease.

The Northwest Pilot Project hopes to find workable and cost-effective tracking systems in Hawai'i, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Utah, and Nevada, said coordinator Julie Morrison of the Idaho Cattle Association.

Authorities last week confirmed another case of mad cow disease in Canada, the second of the deadly brain-wasting disease in that country since U.S. officials announced last month they would resume the cross-border cattle trade in March.

Business Hall of Fame honors two

Junior Achievement has announced the 2005 Hawaii Business Hall of Fame Laureates: Robin K. Campaniano and Masaru "Pundy" Yokouchi.

The two were recognized for their life-long accomplishments and contributions to the state's business development and community enrichment.

They join the roster of 56 previous honorees since the Hawaii Business Hall of Fame's inception in 1990.
