Fire leads to Kalihi Street evacuation

At least a dozen people had to leave their apartments early this morning after a fire broke out in a combination business and residential building on Kalihi Street.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the fire, at 3075 Kalihi St., was reported at 2:49 a.m. and was brought under control about 20 minutes later.

Tejada said the fire was confined to a silk-screening shop, one of four businesses on the building's ground floor. Eight rental units are located on the upper floor.

Eight fire companies responded to the two-alarm blaze which caused approximately $50,000 damage to the ground-floor unit and $50,000 damage to its contents.

Investigators were working this morning to determine how the blaze started.



Domestic threats end in arrest

A 45-year-old man was arrested in Kalihi yesterday after he allegedly threatened to shoot his ex-girlfriend.

The woman, 33, said the man twice threatened to shoot her while the two were arguing about 2:40 p.m. and told the woman he would shoot police officers if they tried to intervene.

Police were called and the former boyfriend was found and arrested for first-degree terroristic threatening.



North Shore car burglaries reported

A 20-year-old woman was arrested on the North Shore yesterday for suspicion of various offenses after police responded to a report of a car break-in in progress.

A patrol officer arrived on the scene about 4:15 p.m. and confronted the woman who tried to run but was caught. The officer learned that the car the woman was sitting in when he arrived had been reported stolen.

Drugs and a pistol were in plain view inside the car, the officer said.

The woman was arrested for suspicion of car theft, failing to keep a firearm in a proper place, possession of dangerous drugs and possessing drug paraphernalia.



Village Park woman arrested

A 51-year-old Village Park woman was arrested yesterday after allegedly threatening her daughter with a knife.

The daughter, 25, told police she was arguing about 3:20 p.m. with her mother, who grabbed a knife and threatened to stab her.

Police were called and the mother was arrested for suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.



Stolen car leads to arrest

A 17-year-old girl was arrested in Nanakuli yesterday afternoon for suspicion of car theft.

Police officers assigned to the Wai'anae Coast crime reduction unit were checking an area known as a dumping ground for stolen vehicles when they passed by a car about 2:45 p.m. with the girl sitting in the driver's seat.

Officers said the girl tried to hide her face as they drove past, raising their suspicions. The officers ran a check on the car's license plate and learned the car had been stolen earlier in the day.

The girl was then arrested for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.



Honolulu man arrested

A 46-year-old man was arrested in Honolulu yesterday after police found him driving a car that had been reported stolen.

A patrol officer said the man committed a traffic violation in front of him about 2:15 p.m. and that he ran a check of the license plate on the man's car. The check indicated the car's owner had reported it stolen and the driver was arrested for suspicion of car theft.



Theft leads to weapons charge

A 22-year-old man was arrested near the Pearlridge Mall yesterday morning on suspicion of car theft and a weapons charge.

A patrol officer saw the man operating a red Jeep about 10:35 a.m. with an expired safety sticker and ordered the driver to pull over.

A check of the Jeep's license plate and vehicle identification numbers showed that its registered owner, a 25-year-old woman, had reported it stolen.

The man who was driving the Jeep when was arrested for suspicion of unlawful control of a propelled vehicle and for failure to properly store a firearm after police reported finding a modified flare gun in the Jeep's center console.
