Pearl City hands Mililani first loss

Advertiser Staff

Another unbeaten has fallen in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division boys basketball, as Pearl City knocked off Mililani, 49-42, last night at McKinley's Student Council Gym.

Mililani, in a three-way tie for No. 7 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, fell to 3-1 while Pearl City improved to 4-1.

Ernie Vidinha scored a game high 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists to lead the Chargers to victory.

Vidinha's layup with 15 seconds remaining in the third period gave Pearl City a 35-34 lead, and the Chargers never trailed again.

Pearl City built the lead to 40-35 early in the fourth quarter, only to see the Trojans close to 42-41 on Scott Neumann's jumper with 3:30 remaining.

But that would be Mililani's final field goal.

Vidinha's layup with 3:05 left gave the Chargers a 44-41 lead, and Blaine Kanno sank a free throw to pull the Trojans to 44-42.

Pearl City then ended the game with a 5-0 run in the final 1:10.

Neumann led the Trojans with 15 points.
