Lehman's 10-under 62 leads Buick

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — Tom Lehman was so locked into his game yesterday that he didn't realize until after his round he had birdied the last six holes for a 10-under 62 and a one-shot lead in the Buick Invitational.

Hawai'i's Dean Wilson birdies his final hole at Torrey Pines' North Course to finish with a 9-under 63 after the first round of the the Buick Invitational in San Diego. Wilson and leader Tom Lehman, who shot a 62, played the easier of the two courses being used for the tournament.

One thing was clear: He must have been on the North course at Torrey Pines.

In a tournament that takes two days to figure out who's playing the best, Lehman matched his career-low round on the easier North course, birdying nine of his final 12 holes for a one-shot lead over Hawai'i's Dean Wilson.

"I'm doing a lot of things right that you need to do right out here," Lehman said.

All but two of the top 17 scores came from the North course (6,873 yards), which played nearly three strokes easier.

Aaron Baddeley (66) and Peter Lonard (67) had the best scores on the South course, which plays to 7,568 yards.

Among the top six players in the world at Torrey Pines, only Ernie Els played the North course and made nine birdies en route to a 65. Tiger Woods, battling the flu, shot 69 at the South Course.
