Honolulu Marathon offers $15 early fee for Hawai'i residents

Advertiser Staff

Just a little more than a month after the last Honolulu Marathon, organizers want runners to already think about this year's event.

Registration for the Dec. 11 race will open on Jan. 29, three months earlier than in 2004.

The incentive?

Hawai'i residents will be able to register at Niketown in Waikiki for $15 until Feb. 6. Starting Feb. 7, the fee will be $60 for Hawai'i residents and $90 for out-of-state runners.

This will be the earliest start for a Honolulu Marathon registration.

"We are hoping the earlier start on all registrations will help us to promote the race more effectively, attract more participation, and increase the economic impact of the event," said Jim Barahal, president of the Honolulu Marathon Association.

Jimmy Muindi won last year's race in 2 hours, 11 minutes, 12 seconds for his fourth Honolulu victory. Lyubov Morgunova won the women's race in 2:27:33.

A total of 22,407 runners finished the 2004 Honolulu Marathon (25,671 entries), making it the third largest marathon in the United States behind the New York City and Chicago marathons, and the sixth largest marathon in the world.
