Iolani turns back Punahou

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Iolani School boys basketball team kept its 89-game win streak against Hawai'i opponents alive last night, holding off arch rival Punahou, 52-50, before a vocal capacity crowd of about 1,800 at Punahou's Hemmeter Field House.

Punahou's Brenton Lee goes up for a shot over Iolani's Wally Marciel during last night's Interscholastic League of Honolulu game at Hemmeter Field House. Iolani won, 52-50.

The three-time defending state champion Raiders, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 20-2 overall and 6-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with their 48th consecutive ILH victory.

Second-ranked Punahou fell to 15-7, 5-1.

The final margin was as close as the Buffanblu got since late in the first half, as Iolani opened up a 39-26 lead by the end of the third period. Punahou closed to 50-47 with 1:24 remaining in the game on Brenton Lee's 3-pointer, but Iolani stretched it to 52-47 with 11 seconds left on a layup by Kawika Shoji.

Miah Ostrowski swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key with four ticks remaining, but the Buffanblu were out of timeouts, allowing time to expire.

"I give credit to Punahou, because they came out hard," said Raiders guard Kyle Pape, who finished with a game-high 24 points. "But (the win streak) feeds our pride, and as long as we play with heart and do the things we're supposed to do, we'll be fine."

That meant playing Iolani's relentless and suffocating defense, which allowed few open looks for the Buffanblu. In the first half, the Raiders' interchangeable 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man sets held Punahou's top outside shooters — Ostrowski, Spencer McLachlin and Danny Cho — to a combined six points.

"Punahou's a really good team and if you play the same defense against them and allow them to get into a rhythm, they can be impossible to stop," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "We mixed up our defenses to try to take them out of rhythm and I think it gave them trouble. You could see at the end when they were trying to catch up, their rhythm was to press and fire it up, and they were tough to defend."

Punahou's Miah Ostrowski's drive to the basket was halted by Iolani's Wally Marciel, who drew the offensive foul on the play.

Punahou coach Greg Tacon said the Raiders' pressure defense was nothing unexpected, but adjusting to it has proven to be tougher than it seems.

"We tried to tell our guys, 'You cannot let them disrupt what you're trying to do,' " Tacon said. "But when they extend their defense like that, the passes get tougher, the catches get tougher and all of a sudden you're not shooting from where you want to shoot. We were able to dictate the offensive pace at times, but most times (Iolani) dictated the pace. They are so aggressive."

Vinny Nip added 14 points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist for Iolani and Shoji contributed nine rebounds, four points and one steal. Ostrowski led the Buffanblu with 17 points and Lee added 13 points.

Iolani's last loss to a Hawai'i opponent happened Dec. 8, 2001, when Kalaheo won, 68-60, in the James Alegre Invitational final. The Raiders' last loss to an ILH team was Feb. 3, 2001, when Saint Louis won, 57-55.
