UH softball coach gets extension through '08

University of Hawai'i softball coach Bob Coolen has received a contract extension through 2008 with an option for the 2009 season.

The UH Board of Regents approved the new contract at its meeting yesterday, a spokesperson said. Financial details were not immediately available.

Coolen, who began at Hawai'i in 1992, is 484-311 at UH.

His previous contract, which paid a $60,000 base salary, expired June 30, 2004.

The new agreement runs from July 1, 2004, through June 30, 2008. He may receive an extension through June 30, 2009, for "satisfactory performance," a school spokesperson said.

Metzger, Stanley up for Olympic award

Honolulu's Stein Metzger and Clay Stanley are among the athletes nominated by the United States Olympic Committee for its 2004 SportsMan, SportsWoman and Team of the Year honors.

The nominees are the 2004 athletes and teams of the year representing Olympic, Pan American and affiliated sport organizations within the U.S. Olympic Movement.

Metzger, who played beach volleyball in Athens, was one of 49 nominated for Male Athlete of the Year.

Stanley was part of the U.S. Olympic indoor volleyball team, one of 39 teams nominated.

The top male and female athletes and the top teams were selected by their respective member organizations. The names of the athletes and teams are placed on ballots used to select the USOC SportsMan, SportsWoman and overall Team of the Year. Members of the USOC Board of Directors along with representatives of the national media participate in the voting.

Last year's winners, for 2003, were cyclist Lance Armstrong, figure skater Michelle Kwan and the U.S. women's gymnastics team.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

AVP Pro Tour will finish up in Honolulu

The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and commissioner Leonard Armato yesterday officially announced its 2005 season schedule, which includes a season-ending event in Honolulu.

The season begins April 1 and includes 14 events. The event in Honolulu will be Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.

The tour will distribute $3 million in prize money, double the amount from last season. The money will be split equally between the men and women.



BASKETBALL

No. 24 Hilo knocks off Chaminade, 81-79

Alex Cabagnot scored 17 points, including two free throws to break a 77-all tie with 15 seconds left, and then came up with a steal with five seconds as Hilo edged Chaminade, 81-79, Thursday night at Hilo civic.

The No. 24 Vulcans improved to 17-2 overall and 5-2 in the Pacific West Conference.

The Silverswords dropped to 11-6 and 5-2.
