Punahou beats Saint Louis, 68-56

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Silencing loud chants of "Oh-ver-RAY-ted!!" every time he touched the ball, Punahou sophomore Miah Ostrowski poured in a career-high 32 points last night to help the visiting Buffanblu defeat Saint Louis, 68-56, at McCabe Gym.

Punahou, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 6-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The unranked Crusaders fell to 5-2 one night after a 68-56 upset of No. 4 Kamehameha.

The Buffanblu were coming off a physically and emotionally draining 52-50 loss to No. 1 Iolani on Friday, but Ostrowski found added energy when he started to hear taunts from the Saint Louis student section.

"It pumped me up," said Ostrowski, a 5-foot-10 guard who was an Advertiser All-State first-team selection last season. "I told myself I have to go all out and have a career game, and I did. I just played hard and my teammates kept getting me the ball. It's a big win for us."

The youthful Crusaders came out looking for another upset, jumping to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes. Their only senior, 6-3 point guard Jack Miller, scored eight of those points and finished the period with 13.

He ended up with 27 points, six rebounds and two assists.

"I had never seen him play live, so I didn't know if we should go zone (defense) or box-and-one or what," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "We stayed in front of him, but we couldn't stop him from shooting. He was matching Miah basket-for-basket. But considering what happened to us last night, we're really proud of how our guys came back."

Ostrowski's jumper with eight seconds remaining in the first period capped a 14-5 run to put the Buffanblu up, 16-15, and Punahou never trailed again.

A bank shot by Brenton Lee stretched the lead to 37-29 with 30 seconds left in the half, before a 3-pointer by John Quindara closed it to 37-32 at intermission.

Ostrowski, with a spectacular display of dazzling drives and pull-up jumpers, scored 15 points in the second quarter and finished the half with 22.

"He's a great player, and it's the same way with Jack where he's also able to find the open guy," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "The difference was when their different guys got open, they knocked down their shots, and we didn't."

The Crusaders got as close as 43-39 on Miller's putback with 4:30 remaining in the third period, but Punahou pulled away as Lee and Spencer McLachlin helped Ostrowski with the scoring burden.

Lee hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Buffanblu a 60-45 lead with five minutes left in the game, and Saint Louis could not get closer than eight thereafter.

McLachlin finished with 13 points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist, and Lee added 12 points, one steal and one assist. In addition to his 32 points, Ostrowski had four assists, three steals and two rebounds.
