Hilo tops Chaminade in PacWest basketball

Osadonor Esene scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Hawai'i-Hilo to a 72-66 Pacific West Conference basketball victory over Chaminade yesterday at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

UH-Hilo is 6-2 in the PacWest and 18-2 overall. Chaminade is 5-3 and 11-7.

Hilo shot 64 percent (14 of 22) in the first half and Chaminade 26 percent (7 for 27) as the Vulcans took a 39-19 lead.

Corey Campbell had 27 points and Chris Reaves 17 for Chaminade.



BYUH 5-0 in PacWest

Thomas Watkins scored a game-high 27 points to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to an

88-64 Pacific West basketball victory over Western New Mexico yesterday at Silver City, N.M.

BYUH leads the conference at 5-0 and is 10-4 overall. Western New Mexico is 1-5 and 6-11.

Watkins hit seven of his 10 3-point attempts and was 4 for 4 from the free throw line. Jake Chrisman added 17 points.

The Seasiders were 13 for 13 from the line and hit 60 percent of their 3s.

BYUH led 32-20 at halftime.

James Newell led Western New Mexico with 12 points.



Billings routs HPU

Cameron Munoz and Justin Hassell each scored 27 points yesterday to lead Montana State-Billings to a 112-89 PacWest victory over Hawai'i Pacific at Billings, Mont.

MSU-Billings is 2-4 in the Pacific West and 19-6 overall. HPU is 1-6 and 7-10.

Audrius Peciukas led the Sea Warriors with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Dante Sykes scored 18 points, Aleka Jakovcjevic 14 and Finis Harwell 10.

Hassell made 11 of 14 shots from the field while Munoz made 8 of 15 shots, including five 3-pointers.

Lucas Walker had 19 points and Buddy Windy Boy finished with 15 for MSU-Billings.



SWIMMING AND DIVING

UH women win; BYU edges Rainbow men

The University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving team defeated San Diego State, 173-103, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex yesterday.

The men's team lost to Brigham Young, 150-149.

The teams complete their dual-meet schedule against Washington on Feb. 5.
