Union rejects Hawaiian cuts
Advertiser Staff and News Services
Hawaiian Airlines' mechanics union has voted against a new agreement with the company, pushing back efforts by Hawai'i's largest airline to win labor concessions from its five unions and emerge from bankruptcy.
Hawaiian officials are scheduled to negotiate this week with its pilots' union over possible new concessions. Tentative agreements with Hawaiian's four other unions required that each of them approve similar agreements.
Aloha Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association, the pilots' union, said yesterday they reached agreement on a new 28-month contract that takes effect Feb. 1.
The two parties agreed not to release details of the deal. Aloha Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Dec. 30 and aims to emerge in the fall.
Hawaiian Airlines continued to lead the nation's airlines with an 84.1 percent load factor in December.
Load factor is the proportion of available seats filled by a carrier.
Hawaiian led the industry in year-to-date load factor for every month of 2004 and ended with an 85.7 percent load factor for the year.
