Hale'iwa surfer wins contest in Australia

T.J. Barron of Hale'iwa won the Brothers Neilsen Junior Pro surfing contest on Sunday at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Barron defeated Australia's Sam Page in the one-on-one final, which was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves.
Page held the lead late in the heat, but Barron caught a wave in the final 25 seconds and received the 8.0 score he needed to win the final.
The contest was for professional surfers under the age of 21. Barron, 19, received $2,900 for the victory.
Around 200 surfers from around the world participated in the contest.
Ching called up to national team camp
San Jose Earthquakes forward Brian Ching, a Hale'iwa native, has been called into the U.S. National Team camp to prepare for the first World Cup qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago on Feb. 9.
U.S. head coach Bruce Arena called up 28 players to participate in the initial training camp, which began yesterday in Carson, Calif.
U.S. players in Europe will later join the team for training. The roster will likely be trimmed to 18 players.
The Trinidad & Tobago match will be televised live on ESPN2 at 5:30 a.m. Hawai'i time.
Ching, 26, scored two goals in four World Cup qualifying matches last year.

BYUH's Watkins honored by PacWest
Brigham Young-Hawai'i basketball player Thomas Watkins has been named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for his performance in three consecutive road wins this past week.
Watkins, a senior from Phoenix, helped the Seasiders (10-4 overall, 5-0 PacWest) defeat Montana State-Billings, and Western New Mexico twice.
At Montana State-Billings, Watkins scored eight of his team-high 21 points in the overtime period as the Seasiders downed the Yellowjackets, 100-99, on Jan. 18. Two nights later, at Western New Mexico, Watkins hit two crucial free throws with eight seconds remaining in the game to close out a 74-70 win. He ended the week by knocking down seven 3-pointers and scoring 27 points as the Seasiders defeated Western New Mexico again, 84-61, on Saturday.
Watkins is the third Seasider player honored this year and it is the second week in a row a BYUH player has claimed the honor. Last week, Jake Chrisman received the award and Austin Smylie was honored by the league earlier in the season.
Herzan, Schmierer qualify for Turtle Bay
Thomas Herzan of Findlay, Ohio, shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to earn one of two spots in the Turtle Bay Championship, Champions Tour event, starting Friday at the Turtle Bay Resort.
Brad Schmierer, of Hastings, Minn., got the other spot by winning the second playoff hole at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course against Pat McDonald of Rocklin, Calif. Both golfers shot 70 to force the playoff.
Twenty-four golfers played in the qualifier open to professionals over the age of 50.
Herzan is a teaching pro at Findlay Country Club. Schmierer is director of golf at Hastings Country Club in Minnesota.
Jim Olsen of Kihei, Maui, and Stan Souza of Honolulu were Hawai'i top finishers. Both shot 74.
