$95 million needed for Kapolei court, top judge says

Chief Justice Ronald Moon today urged state lawmakers to approve $95 million for a Family Court complex and juvenile detention center in Kapolei.

In his state of the judiciary address to state Senate and House lawmakers, Moon said the project is at a "critical crossroad" because the current legislative session is the last chance to fund the project on 13.6 acres donated by Campbell Estate.

He said the judiciary will forfeit the option of getting the land unless it obtains a construction contract by Dec. 31, 2006.

Moon called the chance to build the complex on the land a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

The complex would include 20 courts for Family Court, Wai'anae District Court and a detention facility for 72 juveniles.
